Tanning Beds vs. Spray Tans?

  in News, Skin Treatment, Uncategorized
With the winter months, not only does the temperature drop, but we all lose our summer glow. Many individuals head south for warmer weather and the lovely sunshine that we all miss so much during our gray Northern Michigan winters. We hear so many individuals saying that they need to get a base tan before heading south.

First and foremost, there is really no such thing as a “health base” tan. ANY and ALL tanned skin, is DAMAGED skin. Tanned skin is a result of damage to the skin cells, your skin producing pigment in response to UV damage in an attempt to protect itself . Over time, the damaged skin cells can lead to wrinkles, age spots, premature aging and even skin cancer. Just one use of a tanning bed can increase your risk of developing a skin cancer, even melanoma, significantly. Woman would tan in a tanning bed before the age of 30, are 6 times more likely to develop a melanoma, which is the deadly form of skin cancer.

Many people say they use tanning beds because they like the way a tan makes them look year round. As opposed to a tanning bed, self-tanners offer you a way to look tan without increasing your risk of developing early wrinkles, leathery skin, and skin cancer. Applied the right way, self-tanners look natural — and won’t give you orange skin, streaks, or splotches.

There are several tanning salons that offer spray tans here in Traverse City. One of Dr. Leithauser’s go to products in the winter months is, SELF TAN EXPRESS ADVANCED BRONZING MOUSSE. This product gives you a great “tan” without all the risks of the sun or the tanning bed.
